Heritage Day 2019
On the 24th of September South Africa remembers and celebrates its cultural, language and tradition heritage. On this day, all South Africans are encouraged to celebrate their cultural traditions within the great diversity of cultures, religions, beliefs and traditions that make up the country. The “rainbow nation” is a proof that many racial groups, cultures and languages can live together building up the national identity.
On the occasion, the President Cyril Ramaphosa in his speech to the nation stated:
“Twenty five years ago, millions of South Africans stood in queues around the country to vote for the first time. Their actions helped give birth to a new country rooted in equality, non-sexism, non-racialism, respect for human rights and tolerance of differences.”
The celebration of Heritage Day here in South Africa, remind us once more how important it is to welcome everyone, regardless of background, ethnicity, religion or otherwise, and celebrate this diversity. With a recent rise in xenophobia, Heritage Day is a good time to reflect on how we view and receive immigrants in South Africa.
