Looking Forward to the African Regional Child Trauma Conference
Representatives of Scalabrini will attend the African Regional Child Trauma Conference, taking place in Cape Town from August 18 to August 21. In response to the crisis affecting too many children across Africa, Jelly Beanz (a social work organization devoted to helping abused and neglected kids) has partnered with several other groups like UNICEF and the Centre for Child Law to share research on child abuse and its prevention and create a constructive dialogue between professionals in related fields.
The four conference days are filled with a combination of keynote presentations, workshops, breakaways, and poster sessions to further educate all participants on the complicated issue of child protection in Africa. Chairperson of the conference and one of four keynote speakers, Dr. Maria Mabetoa will be delivering a welcome address on Monday morning but will also give a presentation entitled “Indigenous Practices in Child Rearing as a Form of Child Protection” on Tuesday. Her position as President of the South African Council of Social Service Professions makes her ideally suited to head this event as it aims to inspire conversation between experts on the protection of children. Other speakers include Professor Soraya Seedat, Professor Benyam Dawit Mezmu, and Reginah Mhaule who will be presenting on “Interventions for Adolescent PTSD: What Works and What Doesn’t,” “Child Soldiers in Africa,” and “Educating a Nation of Traumatized Children,” respectively.
Mrs. Giulia Trever, manager of Lawrence House, and Mrs. Sindisiwe Moyo, member of the advocacy team of Scalabrini Centre will participate in the multi-day conference. As they contribute their own knowledge, they will also certainly learn a great deal from other participants and bring back newfound skills and different ways for protecting against child abuse when they return to Scalabrini.
