Seafaring in the 21st Century. Is Maritime Education in the Philippines Up for the Challenge?
The Philippines is recognized as a major source country of seafarers on international merchant ships, providing more than 30 percent of the total global seafarer requirement. Many Filipinos aspire to become seafarers to achieve their dreams for a better life for their families. Around 90 maritime schools offer programs to interested aspirants and numerous training centers that provide continuing education and skills upgrading for seafarers. Concerns about the quality of maritime education have been a topic of discussion for many years. Significant trends also have implications for the employment chances of Filipino seafarers: increasing automation, the fit between maritime education and changing industry requirements, and increasing competition from other countries.
The Scalabrini Migration Center and Stella Maris Centers in the Philippines will hold a webinar, “Seafaring in the 21st Century: Is Maritime Education in the Philippines Up for the Challenge?” on 9 February 2021, 2:00-4:00 PM. The webinar focuses on higher education maritime schools and aims to take a close look at the current and future state of maritime education, to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses, and to identify key steps towards quality, useful and relevant maritime education in the country. We have invited resource persons representing different sectors in the maritime industry to present their perspective on the topic. We hope the multi-stakeholder discussion will produce doable recommendations for moving forward.
