THE ”Other” PEOPLES FILM FESTIVAL
The Scalabrini Institute for Human Mobility in Africa (SIHMA) and Refugee Social Services (RSS) are hosting the ‘Other' Peoples Film Festival for World Refugee Day this year with a Film Screening and Discussion on Monday 22 June 2020 at 14h00 SAST. The Festival is in commemoration and celebration of World Refugee Day on 20 June. The ‘Other’ Peoples Film Festival is an initiative started by Refugee Social Services and has been running for a number of years. The name ‘The “Other” Peoples Film Festival’ and in particular the word “other” was chosen because when people are Othered, they are marginalised and forced to flee. The festival starts a conversation about othering and how we should redirect the narrative towards inclusion and integration of refugees and in general.
This year the Film Festival will be screened virtually via Zoom and will be followed by a panel discussion and reflection on the films.
Date for Screening: 22 June 2020
Time: 14h00
Venue: Zoom Virtual Meeting
The details of the Zoom initial meeting introduction, film screening and then panel discussion will be sent upon receipt of an email to admin@sihma.org.za indicating interest in attending.
Films on refugees and migrants are helping to correct misinformation and counter xenophobia and redirect the narrative towards better integration and a greater appreciation for plight of refugees and migrants. See IOM Article ‘New Data Reveal: Films Fight Xenophobia, Movies Counter Misinformation about Migrants’ dated 29 May 2020. https://www.iom.int/news/new-data-reveal-films-fight-xenophobia-movies-counter-misinformation-about-migrants
We look forward to you joining us for the Other Peoples Film Festival and to continued Commemoration and Celebration of World Refugee Day.
